On September 8, 1966, NBC aired the first-ever episode of what would go on to become a cultural phenomenon and one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all-time. There have been many incarnations of “Star Trek” in both film and on TV over the past 50 years, including the recent big-screen reboots and the upcoming CBS prequel series, “Star Trek: Discovery,” premiering in 2017.

Among the first to celebrate 50 years of “Star Trek” was William Shatner, who starred as Captain James T. Kirk on the original show. “HB2U! #StarTrek50 My best, Bill,” the actor tweeted. He later added various party-themed emojis, and wrote, “50 years! Can you believe it?” Meanwhile, Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura on the series, wrote, “For #StarTrek50, look at how far we’ve come, and how far we have to boldly go. What an exciting future we all have.”

George Takei, who played Sulu on the original show, expressed, “50 years have passed since the Enterprise’s maiden voyage on NBC & Gene Roddenberry’s vision lives on.” John Cho, who portrayed Sulu in the most recent reboots, simply posted an emoji of the Vulcan hand salute next to a heart. And Karl Urban, otherwise known as Doctor ‘Bones’ McCoy in the reboots, also posted Vulcan salute emojis and added, “Happy 50th Star Trek!! Congratulations and Thanks.”

Simon Pegg, who portrayed Scotty in the newest movie installments, offered, “50 years and still kicking ass. Happy Birthday to the epitome of keeping the dream alive. Live long and prosper.” Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” noted, “Star Trek taught me that I could grow up to be anyone casting wanted.”

Brent Spiner, or Data from “The Next Generation,” tweeted, “Fifty years ago tonight, I was watching t.v. Good show came on. People still watching it. (Whistle).” Meanwhile, after former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright tweeted in recognition of the show’s big milestone, Patrick Stewart a.k.a. Captain Jean-Luc Picard, responded, “Hands done my all-time favourite Trekkie. Thank you Madame Secretary!” Gossip Cop also wishes “Star Trek” a happy 50th anniversary!
